We now have communal composting bins in the concrete bays at the main car park. We added them in the recognition that on quarter plots especially, it's hard to find the space to compost properly. We have astonishingly dedicated composting volunteers just now - if you see them working, please do thank them for all the hours they spend, and help them by following the instructions.
They are for composting green material only. Do not add mares tail. Other perennial weeds such as couch grass and ground elder must be dried out before composting. Do not add wood, branches, long twigs such as raspberry canes, clumps of soil, or root balls that have not been broken up as they take too long to break down. You can add raspberry canes and twigs as long as they aren't more than .25 inch/6 mm diameter and 1 in/3 cm long. Root balls must be cut up similarly. There are signs on the bins reminding plotholders what can and can't go in.
Mix and sprinkle so you get air in the layer you're adding.
Please be careful to add new material to the right bin. Sometimes there are no bins accepting material and you just have to wait. Some bins need to be left undisturbed until they rot down, and others have finished compost. We try to keep signage right for everything, but it's hard and we find people move it, so you need to think a little, too. If it looks like finished compost you shouldn't put new material on top and if we put a lid on the bin, that means you shouldn't put anything there.
The compost is free for use on your plots. The signage will tell you when it's ready.
